A great discovery in Amalfi. Smoke provola, pance A great discovery in Amalfi. Smoke provola, pancetta, and olives with caponata napoletana. While eating lunch in Amalfi, a cruise ship had recently landed so the main square was absolutely polluted with tourists. It was unmanageably crowded for us so we took a turn down a narrow alley and found a less popular part of town and ran into this little deli with no one around it. I asked the deli guy what he would eat and he made us one of the best sandwiches we have had in a while. A crusty white bun, pancetta, whole olives, and smoked provola, which was an amazing discovery. Provola is like a fresh mozzarella but a bit more aged while still being soft and wet. It’s then smoked so you get a really fresh cheese with big smoke flavor. It was amazing. I bought an entire round of it later and took a good 2 weeks to finish it. I also tried a caponata napoletana, sort of a local bread salad with olives, tomatoes, and anchovies. Not to be confused with the Sicilian caponata which is entirely different (even though you can literally see Sicily from Amalfi). Naples, Italy. Graffiti in Naples. When it comes Naples, Italy. Graffiti in Naples. When it comes to volume, ubiquity, or sheer size, I can’t think of another city with more graffiti than Naples. There’s the whole gamut of tags to intricate graffiti names to full multistory murals down every inch of the main roads of old town. Some alleys are covered entirely. And no one seems to really be covering them up. There’s a boldness that says that no one really cares that I’m spray painting this wall. And with that amount of time comes great pieces. I noticed many of the same artists active in Florence and Rome had pieces here too. And lots of new work. There was a Banksy that a local restaurant had installed a glass cabinet over to protect it with a large plaque. Not the only street pieces I saw protected by plexiglas installed by some business. Naples, Italy. Walking down Via dei Tribunali. N Naples, Italy. Walking down Via dei Tribunali. North of Spaccanapoli running parallel is Via dei Tribunali, once the middle central Roman street of Decumanus Maggiore. It has a similar spirit as Spaccanapoli but with a bit wider streets and a constant stream of cars weaving with the scooters blazing down tiny streets skimming pedestrians by mere inches and not slowing down a bit. You’ll find some of the bigger attractions here like the original Sorbillo pizzeria and the entrance to Christmas Alley, lots of tour groups following people with numbered flags, and a bit less of the hips bars, but it’s definately worth the time to explore. It’s connected to Spaccanapoli by a series of narrow north/south allies and tunnels that have a lot of derelict charm.. Naples, Italy. Walking the Spaccanapoli. Spaccan Naples, Italy. Walking the Spaccanapoli. Spaccannapoli is the colloquial term for a narrow street that cuts straight through the heart of Naples Old District. A madness of claustrophobic congestion and layered antiquity. Tiny hip bars, pizza joints, and salumerias edged in on all sides by tourist shops and trinket salesmen, dotted with puzzle-piece squares with old statues and decaying churches, the burr and ganky honks of scooters zipping through the crowds at dangerous speeds, tourists and locals alike, a steamy hodge-podge soup of every type of thing all at once. The messy complex heart of Naples. Spaccanapoli means literally “Naples splitter” and is the lowest of the original 3 east/west streets or decumani of the Roman city of Neapolis then called Decumanus Inferiore. The modern street name is Via Benedetto Croce. This street along with the Decumanus Maggiore and Decumanus Superiore were crossed with many north/south streets forming the city’s original grid. Rigatoni con la pajata. Rome, Italy. This was on Rigatoni con la pajata. Rome, Italy. This was one of those uniquely Roman dishes that I read about online and had to seek out. The intestines of an unweaned calf are removed with the undigested mother’s milk left inside, then tied in loops and cut to form small circular sausages of a sort. When cooked the dairy and the rennet from the half digested milk form a type of ricotta-like cheese inside. The loops are usually cooked in a tomato sauce and served with a pasta, in this case rigatoni. I’m usually a champion of offal in all of its forms. It’s delicious and if you’re going to eat meat, I think its essentially moral to do so. But I have to admit there was something about the mother’s milk in this one that kind of got to me. Don’t get me wrong, it was pretty tasty. I can certainly see why the dish is so popular in Rome. And it’s just a personal mental block that I need to overcome, not a comment on the dish. I did eat several of them and gave it a shot but there was a lingering uneasiness. I suppose the same uneasiness other feels at many of the dishes I enjoy. Maybe next time.
